Intolerance is the inability or lack of want to be around people who are different. Ideas, race, religious beliefs and background of a person’s lifestyle are often factors of intolerance. When someone is intolerant, he or she usually has a rough time understanding other people. Intolerance has been used many times in the novel. One example of intolerance is Scout’s Aunt Alexandra. Aunt Alexandra is always telling Scout that she should not be wearing overalls and should be acting more lady-like. This is intolerance because it shows Aunt Alexandra does not understand that Scout does not want to be lady-like in the eyes of her aunt. Another example of intolerance is most of the people in the town and in the Finch family making fun of the Atticus because he has chosen to defend a black man in court. They have been calling him names like “nigger-lover” behind his back. This offends Scout who his extremely defensive of her father. This intolerance shows the inability of many people to see that Atticus is doing a nice thing for someone and they are all just being intolerant of another race. Intolerance is not fair to those who have not harmed another in any way. People are not always what they are assumed to be.
In my own words, intolerance means, to not respect or tolerate other people for there race and or differences. This word intolerance relates to Scott’s cousin. Scott’s cousin says “..I’m here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family” when he is fighting with Scott about Atticus defending an African- American. This is an example of how intolerance relates to the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, because Francis (Scott’s cousin) is being intolerant about African- Americans. I also agree with Jesse when Aunt Alexandra is being intolerance over Scott’s personality. It is Scotts personal preference weather or not she wants to be sporty (tomboy). Aunt Alexandra should accept her how she is, and not be intolerant over how she is.
Intolerance to me means, not being able to handle or even understand why someone or something is the way it is. There are many things to be intolerant like Jesse said ideas, race, and religion are main things people can't be open to. People think its their way or no way. In "To Kill a Mockingbird" has a great example of intolerance, like what Jessica said about Aunt Alexandra. "Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't supposed to be doing things that required pants." This is showing Aunt Alexandra wants things to be her way and can not expect the fact that Scout chose to be different.
I believe that intolerance is no respect towards a person's race, ideas, beliefs, and/or differences. I agree with Atticus when he teaches Jem and Scout a lesson on intolerance on page 90. He says, "Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember, it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." When Atticus says that, he means that we should tolerate things that don't harm us. One example of intolerance is when most of the people in Maycomb County resent Atticus for taking on the Tom Robinson case because he is an African American. Atticus believes that taking this case is the right thing to do and that he might lose, but he will try. I also agree with Jesse when Aunt Alexandra is being intolerant towards Scout for not letting her be herself. Scout should be allowed to express herself the way she wants to. In today's world intolerance unfortunately, still exists. But over the years it has decreased and will hopefully continue to decrease in the future generations.
Intolerence is when people do not care about what other people are doing, they think that everyone should be just like them. Just because people don't act like somebody else, they think that there is something wrong with them. This has been in the novel a lot so far. People make fun of Atticus for defending a black person. Nobody wanted to defend him because they all thought that it would just be a waste of time, that it wouldn't make a difference if he went to jail or if he stayed home. Even though people kept calling him names such as "nigger-lover", he still continued to do what he thought was right. Many people were intolerant of Atticus and the black man just because they belived that what they did was right and anyone who did something different was wrong.
What intolerance means to me is that you dont respect the others peoples view or maybe the way they act. They always think that everything they do is right and they dont understand or comprehend the others person views, or religion, ect. In the book there is alot of intolerance of african americans, many people in the book dont agree that african americans should get the same rights as a white person. For example Atticus defends a african american in court and all of the people in the town think he is crazy. "Im simply defending a negro...but theres been some high talk around town to the effect that i shouldn't do much about defending this man". The people in town are talking because they want things to stay the way they always have, the way they want it.
I think intolerance means to not respect other people who might be different to you and think that you are better than them in any way or the way they are is not the right way to be. In To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee this is used a lot especially when Atticus finch is defending a black person. The whole town starts to call Atticus name behind his back like “nigger-lover”. The kids at school would pick on scout and Jem because his dad was helping a black person. Even Atticus family would say he is bringing a disappoint meant to the family and they would never be able to walk the streets again. Aunt Alexandra tell scout that a girl is not spouse to wear pants and she is only spouse to do things that she can do In a dress. Aunt Alexandra is saying that a girl is not spouse to be a tom boy but to clean, neat and cook.
When I hear the word intolerance I think of it as somebody who will not accept someone or even try to understand someone because they believe in different things. People who are intolerant want to have things their way or no way at all. They don’t even want to try and learn about someone else’s differences whether it be about culture, beliefs, or anything that makes someone unusual. In To Kill A Mocking Bird there are many examples of intolerance. When people in the town find out that Atticus is going to defend a black man in court everyone is so shocked and disappointed. Nobody understands why Atticus would want to help a black man even if it is the right thing to do. Scout asks her dad about him defending an African American after some boy in her school kept teasing her about it. Atticus simply says “if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again (pg 75)” All along Atticus has been teaching his kids not to judge other people. He felt that defending this man was the right thing to do. Even though nobody else agrees with Atticus and are skeptical about the whole situation, Atticus has to show his kids that you should always do what you believe is the right thing, even if it is going against what a lot of people think is wrong.
Intolerance is purposely not respecting a person because of their gender and or race. Everyone has to listen to everyone's idea and opinion no matter how senseless it may be because one day that could possibly be you. Intolerance applies to the novel when in chapter nine, Atticus stands up and tries to protect a "negro." His name is Tom Robinson. Although Atticus is defending Tom Robinson, most people disapprove of his idea to do so. One person who specifically does not agree is Aunt Alexandra. Aunt Alexandra says that defending a "negro" is ruining the family name. "... we'll never be able to walk in the streets of Maycomb County again. He's ruinin' the family, that's what he's doin'. Aunt Alexandra is very upset with Atticus because he is defending Tom Robinson. During this part, Alexandra is being intolerant of Tom Robinson because of his race and that is both inappropriate and politically incorrect.
Intolerance is when you don’t like someone because they are different therefore you don’t want to be around them. There is a great deal of intolerance in To Kill a Mockingbird. An example of intolerance is when everyone Cecil Jacobs is picking on Jem and Scout because Atticus is representing a black man. Nobody likes Atticus’ client because of his race and if Atticus wins the case then people wont like him, Jem, and Scout will get picked on even more. Jem and Scout didn’t realize how serious this was and they just believe in what the kids at school are saying. Also everyone in the town is calling Atticus a “nigger-lover” and jem and Scout don’t understand.
I think intolerance means to not be respectful to other people due to religious beliefs, race and the way they act. Intolerance is used a lot in "To Kill a Mockingbird". One example of intolerance is when Atticus decides to defend a black man in court. The whole town of Maycomb thinks it is absurd. People are calling him a "nigger lover" behind his back and the students in school are picking on Scout and Jem because Atticus is defending a person with different color skin. I agree with Jesse over Aunt Alexandra not accepting the way Scout dresses, tomboy. She prefers a dress whereas Scout prefers overalls. This is a big example of intolerance because Aunt Alexandra cannot understand that Scout wants to be different and wear overalls instead on a dress.
Intolerance is the inability of people to accept others for who they are and it is the lack of someone’s open mindedness. It shows when a person feels so strongly against one thing they become ignorant and intolerant of it. One major example of intolerance is racism. People become intolerant of a certain race of people and then do not give any respect to that entire group of people for no good reason. This applies to the novel because in the novel it takes place at a time where there exists a lot of racism. Atticus is defending a black man in court and at the time this was not approved of for a white man to defend a black man in court. Atticus still is defending the man because he believes in his morals, even though there is a lot of tension and people are willing to hurt Atticus because of how intolerant they are against black people.
